Assignment 6: Continuous beams, one-way and two-way slabs, staircases
Assigned: Thursday 4 May 2006
Due date: Thursday 11 May 2006 1. The floor plan and slab arrangement of a building are shown in Fig. 6.1. The slab
depth is assumed to be 120 mm. The loading is as follows:
Dead load = self-weight + screed + finish + ceiling = 8 kN/m2;
Imposed load = 5 kN/m2.
The condition of exposure is mild. fcu = 30 N/mm2 and fy = 460 N/mm2. Design the
continuous beam S1-S2-S3-S3-S4-S5-S6 and the continuous one-way slabs
between A3-D3 and A4-D4. Show the reinforcement on sketches.
The continuous slabs considered The continuous
beam considered Fig. 6.1 2. The floor plan of a building is shown in Fig. 6.2. It consists of restrained slabs
poured monolithically with edge beams. The slab thickness is to be 150 mm. Total
dead load = 6.0 kN/m2 and imposed load = 2.5 kN/m2. fcu = 30 N/mm2 and fy = 460
N/mm2. Design Slabs 1, 2 and 3 and show the reinforcement in Slab 1 on sketches. 1

Design the side flight of the staircase surrounding an open stair well shown in Fig.
6.3(a) and show the reinforcement on a sketch. A cross-section through the stairs is
shown in Fig. 6.3(b). The stair is built 110 mm into the side wall of the stair well. The
clear width of the stair is 1.5 m; the flight consists of eight risers at 180 mm and
seven going of 220 mm. The imposed load = 5 kN/m2, and fcu = 30 N/mm2 and fy =
