Interjection Issues with Nouns What can cause a mistake in indentifying a noun? 1. Often nouns can be used as adjectives: sofa cushion hotel lobby bread pudding glass beads When you are identifying parts of speech and you encounter a noun used as an adjective, label it an adjective. Issues with verbs Helping and modal verbs: 1. Forms of the verb to be and to have as part of progressive tenses: He is going. They have been going. 2. Modals: can/could, may/might, will/would shall/should, must/must have. 3. Interrogative and emphasis auxiliaries: do/does/did. Issues with Nouns 2. Some nouns are used adverbially: My parents left yesterday. (you can substitute the word when .) (Compare: Yesterday was a good day.) I am joining them tomorrow. (Compare: Tomorrow will be wonderful.) In identifying parts of speech, label the nouns used in this way as adverbs....
