“This agreement (merit pay) underscores how rewarding positive performance is helping infuse our schools with a culture that stresses results and collaboration” Because my partner and I agree with Mayor of New York, Michael Bloomberg, we affirm the following resolution, Resolved: That merit pay based on student achievement should be a significant component of k-12 teacher compensation in United States public schools. Contention 1- Our first key point is that merit pay systems have proven and have been predicted to be a success. What we must see in this debate is that merit pay is a key form of capitalism, and according to Merriam Webster dictionary an economic system characterized by private or corporate ownership of capital goods, by investments that are determined by private decision, and by prices, production, and the distribution of goods that are determined mainly by competition in a free market. Capitalism has continued to strive in the U.S. Without competition, which is a key part of capitalism, standards continue to decrease as we can see in today’s education. Even the Director of Education and Child Policy, Darcy Ann Olsen stated, “Over the past 20
