The tall mountain sides along either side of the valley should shelter the airport from dangerous cross breezes. Nighttime landings may be hazardous, though, when drainage winds are present. ( See figure 9.12 for a similar situation, page 230) 2) Suppose that the surface air on the windward side of a mountain rises and then descends on the leeward side. Recall that the dewpoint temperature is a measure of the amount of water vapour in air. Explain why the relative humidity of the descending air drops as the dewpoint temperature of the descending air increases. Relative humidity depends on temperature, in addition to the amount of water vapour in the air. As air descends, its temperature increases, thus decreasing the relative humidity.
