Octopus has 300 million neurons. More neurons in human brains than stars in the Milky Way! If we line up all the neurons in a brain they will extend for 600 miles! Each neuron is connected to aprox. 10,000 other neurons. Velocity of signal up to 250 miles/hours. Why Biological Psychology? Do we use 10% of our brain? Do we have a mind and a body? What makes you think? What makes you feel? What makes you move? Do we have free will? Why Biological Psychology? Brain is an information processing organ Receives information (input) Process information Directs the actions of the whole body (output) Cells of Nervous System Glial Cells: “Assistants” of neurons 1 2 3 4 5
