Unformatted text preview: Chapter 16 Waves Two main types of waves : 1. Mechanical waves : (+ medium) sound waves, water waves, grain waves. 2. Electromagnetic waves : visible light, radio waves, television signals, x-rays. Basic variables of wave motion crest trough amplitude A t 1 t 2 period T = t 2 - t 1 frequency f = 1/T A traveling wave that causes the particles of the disturbed medium to move perpendicular to the wave motion is called a transverse wave . A traveling wave that causes the particles of the medium to move parallel to the direction of wave motion is called a longitudinal wave . Surface water waves exhibit a combination of transverse and longitudinal displacements. Water molecules experience no net displacement during one complete cycle. One-dimensional traveling waves ) ( vt x f y- = dt dx v = ) ( x f y = Superposition principle If two or more traveling waves are moving through a medium, the resultant wave function at any point is the algebraic sum of the wave functions of the individual waves.of the wave functions of the individual waves....
