Freedom’s Orator/Free Speech Movement: Fall of 1964 Mario Savio (first a member of SNCC, involved in freedom summer campaign) Coming back from the South, Freedom Summer quickly transformed the volunteers themselves o They had come face-to-face with the evil of racism, but also the courage of the Mississippians to resist, and they returned home ready to purge the US of racism and social injustice o Civil rights movement inspired in him an antiauthoritarianism and a faith in mass protest o Students began to look at their own institutions and see how profoundly undemocratic they were Savio: militant yet popular oratory, spoke from the heart and his head… an intense desire to inspire thought and dialogue o Embodied a mass movement rooted in moral principle o He makes the dramatic call to resist unjust authority “ There is a time, when the operation of the machine becomes so odious, it makes you sick…” Telling the students to heed their consciousness and take up activism Embodied the idealism and iconoclasm of the insurgent sixties o He was enough of a realist to recognize that it was not dreamy rhetoric about socialism but immediate demands—he called “consequential speech”—that offered the best prospect of social change o Burned by the media glare o Faded from the scene, some thought if he stayed on he could have kept the New Left from falling prey to “revolutionary adventurism” in the Vietnam era Once powerless students coming together nonviolently mount massive sit-ins, build a student strike, and humble UC President Clark Kerr Lived through the cold war era, which saw many kids disillusioned with the tense age of the nuclear arms race, McCarthyism, and the consumerism of cold war America. o Central theme of the Port Huron Statement Results/Gains: o The regents began backing off and giving the students the freedom of speech. They also fired Chancellor Strong. Governor Brown fired Clark Kerr. Faculty stayed a campus power and students gained more say on rules and policies that would affect them. o Ronald Regan ran for governor of the State of California, promising specifically to clean up the mess in Berkeley.” Gitlin Movement Media Dance: “the media needed stories, preferring the dramatic; the movement need publicity for recruitment, for support, and for political effect” Starting in 1960: SDS was NOT covered by major news media
