In management literature, span of management is also called as span of supervision or  control. However, the term span of management is more appropriate as compared to its  alternatives because span is one of management and not only of control or supervision  which are merely a part of management. Span of management is referred to the number  of subordinates which can be effectively managed by superior. A basic question arises: How many subordinates can be managed by a superior ? Is  there any ideal number ? Actual spans in business organisation indicate that there is no  one best number that can be universally applied; however, the number is to be limited  because human capacity is limited. This number has been made. Let us analyse the  various approaches in determining ideal span of management.
