Phosphoric Acid in Soda Group Participants: Jason Christian , Thomas Cassidy, Brendan Mitchelson, and Samir Kashyap Section Number: 528, Group #8 Meeting Time: 12:30-5:20 April 13, 2007 TA: Brian Roehm Introduction Phosphates are a major requirement in all living organisms’ diets. The energy required to run the living body, ATP, is made up of phosphate. In addition, phosphates make up the framework of DNA. Not only do animals need phosphate, but plants also need phosphate. Plants have much more trouble taking in phosphates than animals. This is why many fertilizers contain large amounts of phosphate. Fertilizing with phosphates causes negative side effects to the environments. The excess phosphate in the water creates a deficiency in oxygen. This sometimes causes marine life to develop hypoxia, a shortage of oxygen in the blood. However, when used in moderation, phosphates are natural nutrients required by the body. Experimental Experiment 1 First, a 200 mL 1.0 x 10 -3 M solution of phosphate and water was created. From that 200 mL solution, a 100 mL phosphate solution of 2 x 10 -5 was created. Next, a 100 mL solution from the 1.0 x 10 -3 solution of 5.0 x 10 -5 M, a 1.0 x 10 -4 M solution, a 2.0 x 10 -4 M solution, and a 5.0 x 10 -4 M solution was created. From each of these solutions, the
