Littman 1 Joe Littman History 112 Professor Jackson 10 December 2010 History Final Question 7 The name Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. carries serious weight in our culture. Reverend King was the focal point of the struggle for civil rights and equality. The image that would typically come to memory is MLK giving his famous “I Have a Dream” speech, which was delivered in Washington D.C. at the Lincoln Memorial. So naturally it is strange to think of MLK alone in a narrow cell in the Birmingham City Jail using the margins of newspapers and the backs of legal papers to craft the philosophical foundation of the Civil Rights Movement. His work had to be smuggled out of the jail. The resulting piece of rhetoric was the “Letter From Birmingham City Jail”, which is now considered a classic of world literature. It was written as a response to eight local white clergymen who had denounced Dr. King's nonviolent protest, demanding an end to the demonstrations for desegregation of lunch counters, restrooms and stores. Historian Glenn Eskew wrote that MLK’s arrest and then release of the Letter from Birmingham "led to an awakening to the evils of segregation and a need for reforms in the region” (Garrow). But how could one letter change a whole nation? Scholars have studied the history of this letter to determine the answer to this question. MLK was a
