Littman 1 Joe Littman History 112 Professor Jackson 10 December 2010 History Final Question 6 One of the darkest times in American history occurred “in the tense Cold War atmosphere that followed the detonation of a Russian atomic bomb and the “loss” of China is 1949” (Franklin). Members of our government, lead by Senator Joseph McCarthy, essentially began a communist witch-hunt, which became known as McCarthyism. R. W. Franklin, an associate professor of history and the director of the Christian Humanism Project at St. John’s University, defined McCarthyism as “a national campaign to deprive American Communists of their constitutional rights and their employment.” To do this the government created multiple “Inquisitors, [which] were the individuals…that [identified] the so-called Communist subversives. Official government agencies, like the congressional investigating committees and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), were prominent here, but so too…were state investigating committees, police department red squads, and such private groups as the American Legion.” (Schrecker) These inquisitors backed by popular support led an “anticommunist crusade [affecting] thousands of individuals, institutions, and communities” (Schrecker).
