Professor Tate 16 November 11 Black Women In Political Context DJ Kool Herc: Extra Credit Essay Clive Campbell, known as DJ Kool Herc was born in Jamaica on April 15, 1955. He is acknowledged as the man who started hip hop music. He was recently invited to Rutgers for a conference. At the conference he gave us a taste of his DJ skills and his history of himself. During the question and answer session he gave us a brief description of his life and how he got hip hop started. When Kool Herc was young, at the time he was in Jamaica he was slowly assimilating to the American culture. He had family in the Unites States, he had a connection to the U.S before he came. At the age of 11-12, he moved to America for the very first time. Kool Herc stated he was hurt when he was leaving Jamaica to migrate to America. He was sad he had to leave his friends, family, the beach, his every thing. He left a life that he knew behind him because he was going to start another one. One thing I found humorous was when he said moving meant, “no more mango’s”. I’m not of
