DNA: Structure and Replication - 7 Two strands of nucleotides, with their bases hydrogen-bonded to each other would form a ladder if, and only if, the sugar phosphate backbones ran in opposite directions to each other, or anti-parallel to each other, and twisted to form a double helix. The end of a DNA molecule will have a free sugar (3' end) on one side of the "ladder" and a free phosphate (5' end) on the other side.
