1. What do political parties do? Political Parties are a group of people who seek to control government and influence public policy by winning elections and holding public office. They also have common principals and shared values. Political parties, simply put, select candidates through primary elections and try to win office. In doing so, the political party attempts to gain power in the executive and legislative branch of government. Political parties tend to take positions that they believe will be popular with the voters. This is the rational choice theory. Also, political parties function as an informer stimulator, or it functions as an informer to the public about its positions on broad issues (platform) and specific issues (planks). Also, the political party functions as an informer to the public about the candidates such as what they stand for. This requires information, advertising, and money. Another function of the political party is the bonding function. The political party attempts to create a bond between the party and voters. In doing so, the voters will show loyalty to the party, since the party provides a symbol for the voters. Lastly, the political party has its functions in government. For example, the House and Senate leaders are decided based on majority party leaders. Also, the President is allowed to pick members of his party to key positions. This is called the
