Jason Christian 3 AP Senior English Ms. Chamberlain 1/22/2006 “Her unique role is in conception…since for other purposes men would be better assisted by other men” (Thomas Aquinas). Since the beginning of time, people have been making wrong judgment of others. Prior to Women’s Suffrage and other movements in the late 1920, women were treated as inferiors compared to men. Thomas Aquinas, a Catholic Philosopher, believed that women were indeed inferior to men. Although our generation does not believe these statements, most people prior to the 1920’s believed women were second to men. In The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, John treats his wife in a manner that would be more than frowned upon today. Although we do not accept the beliefs of the 1800’s; nevertheless, John did live in that time and acted upon his generation’s beliefs. Probably the most significant misconception that people of the 1800’s held is the belief that men are intellectually and physically superior to women. This was due to the
