Jason Christian Revolutionary War Essay #1 9/15/04 It was the year of our Lord 1776. There was no peace between nations. There was no kinship between England and the radical colonists. Fueled by intolerance and ill- treatment, the colonists rebelled against King George III. After King George initiated the Intolerable Acts, Americans were fed up with his ruling overseas. Although most were neutral to the idea of independence, a minority group swayed the country. Thomas Paines’ Common Sense and Thomas Jefferson’s’ The Declaration of Independence lead to the colonists’ rising against Britain. Before the writing of Common Sense , only a minority of Americans wanted Independence. Some didn’t want Independence because they were born in Britain and didn’t want change. Others were afraid of losing their wealth and fame. Most loyalists were understandably afraid of being hanged as traitors. Thomas Paines’ document showed Americans that after a wrong has been brushed off enough, it appears to be just. They should not stand for these wrongs for they were chosen people and
