PHY 2048 Midterm Exam - DAY Fall 2008 Use g = 9.80 m/s . 1. [20 points] A 7.83 kg mass slows down from 48.7 m/s to 29.8 m/s while sliding 32.3 m. Find its acceleration and the time it took for this to happen. Give your well-organized calculation below. Indicate your answers clearly. 2. [15 points] A 0.183 kg bullet is moving to the right at 946 m/s when it strikes an 8.96 kg wooden box that is initially at rest. The bullet goes through the box and is observed to be moving at 635 m/s to the right after the collision. What is the speed of the box immediately after the collision? 3. [20 points] An object is launched from a point at ground level (take this as the origin) and lands on the ground 3.84 seconds later. The landing point is 739 m away (horizontally) and 38.4 m below the launching point. Ignore air friction. What was the initial velocity? Give your answer in component form. 4. [15 points] A satellite of mass 327 kg is in an orbit that is 3641 km above the surface of the earth. Find its acceleration due to gravity. The other data you need are on the front of the exam: G = kg m
