Healthcare Quality Improvement 2 The purpose of this paper is to talk about the importance of healthcare quality improvement. I chose this topic because in the hospital I work I constantly see how the leadership team is continuously working to provide information on how to improve the healthcare quality. During 1970’s and 1980’s there was a rise in the numbers of medical malpractice cases. In order to control the number of malpractices cases a congressman from Oregon created the healthcare quality improvement act in 1986 to reduce medical errors and protect the public from incompetent practitioner from moving state to state without discovering previous damages. The act was created to address two problems that were considered endemic in the medical community. (Heffernan,1996). Peer review was the first step in this process to encourage clinicians to participate in investigations to apprehend cases of liability however, physician cannot be held liable for statements made during the peer review but these can be used as evidence during court process. Now, the eager to encourage other generation and the use information related to safety within healthcare organization, the federal government created the Patient Safety Quality Improvement Act in 2005. With this law providers are allowed to create organization that promote patient safety where confidential discussion of adverse events occurs. Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration Healthcare define quality improvement as a systematic and continuous actions that help to measure the improvement in healthcare services provided to patients (April 2011). 2.
