2 Required Materials Books: Giancoli Physics for Scientists and Engineers (4 th edition) Mastering Physics Subscription (bundled with book, or available on Mastering Physics web site). Other items: “clicker.” I will begin including interactive response questions during lecture starting next week. Required Materials Mastering Physics You will need a “Student Access Kit” for MasteringPhysics. This includes and access code and instructions for registering. This is bundled with the textbook. If you have a textbook which does not include a MasteringPhysics access kit you can get access from www.masteringphysics.com . I will give detailed instructions for registering when the PHYS171/171H course is ready (tomorrow).

4 Lecture Content Although lecture notes will be posted, not all lecture content will appear on the web site •Calculations will generally be done on the chalkboard •Problems will be worked and full treatment may not appear in the lecture notes •Demonstrations will be performed. •Homework will be collected •Class participation during lecture will be clickers and extra credit will be given for participation. It will generally be necessary to attend lecture and take careful notes for future study. Undergraduate Research In the past, outstanding students in my undergraduate lecture classes have gone on to become undergraduate researchers in my Biophysics laboratory.
