Literacy in the Classroom EDUCATION WEEKLY By Anna Scott Literacy is vital to the education system. It used to be defined as reading and writing ability, but it is understood today as making sense of and engaging in advanced reading, writing, listening, and speaking (Alber, 2014). It was believed before to only be needed in English Language Arts, but it has been realized that literacy is necessary for all content areas. As we are in the 21 st century, adolescents that are entering the adult world will depend on being able to read and write to perform in their careers, be citizens, run households, and for aspects of their personal lives (Alber, 2014). As literacy is focused on in teaching all content, it can create positive effects in student confidence along with developing their abilities in understanding context clues and helping enhance instructional time.
