Matrix elements of electric ﬁeld between the n = 1 and n = 2 states of hydrogen. First, write down explicitly the wave functions of the states involved in the problem. Then, examine the integrals for the matrix elements and argue which integrals vanish identically by symmetry. Finally, calculate the remaining non-zero integrals. Additional question: Verify explicitly that results of your calculations are consistent with the selection rules described in Sec. 9.3.3.
