Chemical Engineering 132A Analytical Methods of Chemical Engineering Professor Mike Gordon, Fall 2011 Mathematica Primer Mathematica is an extremely powerful software package that can numerically and symbolically manipulate all kinds of mathematical expressions involving algebra, series, calculus, differential equations, matrices….the list goes on and on and on. Simply put, Mathematica can do (or be programmed to do) just about anything involving mathematics and finds wide application in many branches of science and engineering. Some important things to know before you start : Mathematica likes to do things symbolically…this way, virtually any expression or task can be used as an operator or function to do something to something else (i.e., numbers, variables, expressions, lists, matrices, etc.) Input syntax is CASE sensitive and inflexible : you must enter functions, arguments, etc. correctly. All functions (built-in or user-defined) are represented with brackets: [ ] Built-in functions start with CAPITALS: Sin[x], Cos[x], Exp[x], D[x], Integrate[x] Use Shift+Enter to evaluate an input cell. Mathematica puts the result of an input cell evaluation into a temporary global
