UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA SANTA BARBARA DEPARTMENT OF CHEMICAL ENGINEERING CHE 142 and ChE 242: Microelectronics Processing Spring 2003 List of things you should know (possible quiz questions) 1) Who invented the first transistor? When and Where? 2) What is a lattice? What is a basis? What is a unit cell? Explain how you describe a crystal structure. 3) What is the crystal structure of Si and GaAs? Give the appropriate Bravais lattice and the basis. What is the common name for these structures? How many Si atoms are there in the conventional unit cell of Si? 4) Sketch a material that has (a) fcc and (b) bcc structures. How many atoms are there per conventional unit cell of the fcc and bcc structures? 5) What are miller indices? The 3 most commonly used Si substrates have (100), (111) and (110) orientation. Show these important planes on the fcc Bravais lattice. Do not draw the Si atoms just indicate the fcc lattice points. 6) Give at least two examples of an elemental semiconductor, a compound semiconductor, and an alloy semiconductor. 7)
