ME 152A 1 Midterm Exam 2 (9:00-10:15 am on November 21, 2011) Problem 1 (30 pts). A ﬂow is described by the velocity ﬁeld, ~ V = ay 2 ˆ i + b ˆ j , where a = 1 m - 1 s - 1 and b = 2 m / s. Coordinates are measured in meters. Please answer the following: (a:5) Is the ﬂow described by the velocity ﬁeld ~ V steady or unsteady ? Justify your answer with a brief statement. (b:5) Do the pathlines and streamlines for this ﬂow ﬁeld coincide? Justify your answer with a brief statement. (c:10) Obtain the equation for the streamline passing through point (6,6). (d:10) At t = 1 s, what are the coordinates of the particle that passed through point (1,4) at t = 0? Problem 2 (50 pts). A conical nozzle with outlet diameter D 2 = 2 . 5 cm is bolted to the end of a pipe of diameter D 1 = 8 . 0 cm as shown in ﬁgure 1. A jet of water with a steady velocity V 2 = 25 m / s exits the nozzle at atmospheric pressure. The assumption of inviscid ﬂow is reasonable given that the nozzle is short.
