Ashley Stephens RMT 301 Professor Nicholson October 13, 2011 Case 17: Avon Embraces Diversity In order to maintain a competitive edge as a global beauty company, Avon must demonstrate a commitment to diversity. Avon markets to women in over 110 countries (Weitz). Therefore it is important for customers to see that Avon’s management team and employees are a diverse group of people. The commitment to diversity initially began when Avon recognized that it needed to refocus on its mission and strategies. Traditionally men played the role of the top managers. However, due to a set of poor strategic decisions, the company started to employ more and more minorities. As a result, the financial performance of the company increased (Weitz). With the transformation of Avon’s company culture, CEO Jim Preston decided to take diversity to the next level. Preston implemented policies to promote women into higher-level positions (Weitz). The belief was that customers needed to connect to the Avon employees so that Avon could in turn be successful in
