AAE 204 Fall 2011 Homework #9 Due start of class on Wednesday, 6 April 2011 The purpose of homework assignments is for students to gain further understanding of classroom principles through application to practical problems. Although discussion of assignments between students is permitted, the solution must represent your own efforts and understanding of the problem. Blatant copies of the solutions will not be accepted, and repeated evidence of copying will lead to failure of the course. Problem 1 (old exam question) A 2-inch diameter rod is made from an elastic isotropic material with E = 10,000,000 psi, G = 3,750,000 psi, and poisson’s ratio = 1/3. The solid rod is subjected to the combined action of an axial force P = 8000 π lbs and a T = 1500 π in-lbs twisting torque as shown. a. Consider point A located on the outer surface of the rod as shown. Determine the stresses acting at this point and show them on the sketch. Be sure to indicate the magnitude and direction of the stresses on the sketch.

### What students are saying

• As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.
