Read over the crystal and ligand ±eld theory sections of Hollas, Modern Spectroscopy , included as the last few pages of Lecture #20. Write down the crystal ±eld orbital con±gurations of the following transition metal complexes: [Cu(H 2 O) 6 ] 2+ , [V(H 2 O) 6 ] 3+ , [Mn(H 2 O) 6 ] 2+ – high spin, [Co(NH 3 ) 6 ] 3+ – low spin. Solutions of [Mn(H 2 O) 6 ] 2+ are a very pale pink in color, that is, this complex has no strongly allowed visible transitions (but does have weakly allowed transitions with epsilon 0.01). Explain why. 2. For the molecules CO, O 2 , and CF, spectra associated with the following states have been observed, and produced the equilibrium bond lengths in each state: CO X 1 Σ + r e = 1 . 1283 ˚ A C 1 Σ + r e = 1 . 1219 ˚ A O 2 X 3 Σ - g r e = 1 . 2075 ˚ A B 3 Σ - u r e = 1 . 6042 ˚ A
