1 Ch. 9 – Articulations • Are a.k.a. joints or arthroses • Are defined as : – Where two bones connect – Where cartilage and bone connect – Where teeth and bone connect • Can be classified by their : Structure = how the joint is built Function = how much range of motion (ROM) the joint permits Femur •1 . Synovial joints – A synovial cavity and an articular capsule are present – E.g. the shoulder joint •3 . Cartilaginous joints – The bones are held together by cartilage – E.g. the pubic symphysis •2 . Fibrous joints – The bones are held together by fibrous CT – E.g. most sutures •4 . Bony fusion joints (synostoses) – E.g. the metopic suture

2 The functional (ROM) classification of joints (see Table 9-1 for more details) •1 . Im movable joints – A.k.a. synarthroses •2 . Slightly moveable joints – A.k.a. amphiarthroses •3 . Freely moveable joints – A.k.a. diarthroses or synovial joints • The tradeoff: – The strongest joints aren’t very mobile – The most mobile joints aren’t as strong Synarthroses ( im movable joints) •1 . Suture = skull bones are bound together by dense CT – E.g. the sagittal suture •2 . Gomphosis = teeth are bound to bony sockets by periodontal ligaments – E.g. teeth in the mandible and maxillae •3 . Synchondrosis = two bones are bound by a rigid cartilaginous (hyaline cartilage) bridge – E.g. epiphyseal plates; the joint between the 1st rib and the manubrium of the sternum

3 Amphiarthroses ( slightly moveable joints) •1 . Syndesmosis = bones are connected by a ligament – “desmo-” = “band” or “ligament” – E.g. the distal ends of the tibia and fibula •2 . Symphysis = bones are connected by
