What role does disorder play in a chemical reaction? QQ: None Do Now: How long does it take for you to clean your room as compared to how long it takes for it to get messy? The Second Law of Thermodynamics The disorder of the universe is always increasing Entropy: the natural tendency for a system to move to a more disordered state. ( S) Brainstorm 3 “real life” examples of increasing entropy… When entropy increases S is positive (+) When entropy decreases S is negative (-) Energy is released when a system moves to a state of disorder (entropy increases). This means that disorder in a system is energetically favorable. Changing Entropy Entropy can be changed in 4 main ways: 1. Temperature changes 2. Phase changes 3. Dissolving of a substance 4. Different # of moles of products and reactants When a substance is heated, molecules move around more which causes an increase in entropy. When matter changes phases, entropy has changed.
