(1839) Modern Periodic Table elements are organized by increasing atomic number Periodic Law: when elements are arranged in order of increasing atomic number, their physical and chemical properties shows a periodic pattern Atomic Radius : the distance from the nucleus to the outermost electron. Measured in picometers (pm) Moving LEFT to RIGHT across a PERIOD Atomic Radius DECREASES Moving TOP to BOTTOM in a GROUP Atomic Radius INCREASES Why do we observe this trend??? More energy levels are added as you move down a group…atoms become larger The nucleus is more attractive (stronger) as you move across a period…pulls the electrons in closer
