Bonding and Molecular Shape – 03 Lewis Structures - Covlanets Aim: How do we draw structural formulas? (cont’d) Do Now: How do covalent bonds form between atoms? Covalent Bonds Form when electrons are shared between two atoms Occurs when nonmetals bond with other nonmetals What electrons are most important when forming bonds? Valence electrons are most important in bonding… Can be shared or transferred Dictate how many bonds an atom “wants” to form Lewis Dot Diagrams: 1. Only show valence electrons 2. Do not pair electrons on a side until necessary Practice: Draw Lewis dot diagrams for the following elements: 1. Mg 2. Br 3. Cs 4. C 5. Si 6. Na + 7. O 2- 8. Ar How are covalent compounds represented with Lewis Structures? Based on the Lewis Dot Diagram, you can find how many bonds an atom “wants” to form: Complete the octet of electrons Unpaired electrons want to bond Pairs of electrons are non-reactive Carbon “wants” to form 4 bonds Oxygen “wants” to form 2 bonds
