Electrons must fill the lowest possible energy levels first… How do electrons fill up each sublevel? Hund’s Rule: a single electron must be placed in each orbital of a given sublevel before pairing takes place Each orbital can exist in 3 different states: Filled: 2 electrons Half-filled: 1 electron Empty: 0 electrons Filled and half-filled sublevels are very stable… Transition metals may rearrange their electrons to achieve filled and half-filled subshells.
