I. Digestion and Nutrition a. Why do we eat? 1. We are what we eat 2. We eat to get energy  ii. Take polymers Break into monomers b. What do we eat? i. Macromolecule ii. Carbohydrates 1. Monosaccharides a. Fruits give fructose, glucose b. Honey is partly fructose and glucose  2. Disaccharaides a. Table sugar, sucrose, maltose  3. Polysaccahrides a. Cellulose i. Also polymer of glucose  ii. Structural molecule  iii. Gives us fiber 1. Helps keep material moving through  our guts  (fiber does this)  iv. Hemicellulose soluble form of fiber,  reducing blood cholesterol levels b. Glycogen (energy for animals) and starch (energy  for plants) are polymers of glucose  4. CW: Dietary Fiber  a. Should have 30-35 mg of fiber a day  b. Reduces chance of colon cancer  5. When fat gets into our system, rate of food going through  gut is slow (lot of fat and less fiber)  6. Large intestine reabsorbs food, keeping it moist with water  (fecal material, feces)
