Dirir Abdullahi Ms. Walton AP English and Composition 05/08/10 Synthesis essay The books “Night”, “Ordinary People”, and “A Farwell to Arms”, all express the impacts of losing a loved one, can have on an individual. When Eliezer lost his father, he felt both happy, and sad, making him a stronger individual. Once Hemmingway lost his wife and unborn baby, he killed himself and in “Ordinary People” Conrad loses his brother, and from there, he is affected psychologically in many ways. Each and every one of these situations show how although; if an individual loses a loved one of equal importance, it affects each and every one of them differently. Not only can the death of a loved one alter an individual’s personality, it can shatter ones spirit. As Guest describes, Conrad Jarret, after the death of his brother Buck, feels no will in living anymore, resulting in an attempted suicide and from there onward the boy is in an unstable mental state.
