Neural tissue page 1 of 5 ANAT 11110 Lectures 28 & 29 Fall 2011 Neural Tissue I. Overview of the nervous system A. Central nervous system (CNS): made up of the brain and the spinal cord B. Peripheral nervous system (PNS): made up of the neural tissue outside of the CNS 1. Location a. Cranial nerves: coming off of the brain b. Spinal nerves: coming off of the spinal cord 2. Function a. Afferent division: carrying nerve impulses from the sensory receptors to the CNS b. Efferent division: carrying nerve impulses from the CNS to muscles, visceral organs, and glands i. Somatic nervous system (SNS) ii. Autonomic nervous system (ANS) II. Cells of the nervous system A. Neurons: cells that transmit nervous impulses 1. Structure a. Soma: cell body of a neuron i. Perikaryon: cytoplasm of a neuron

Neural tissue page 2 of 5 b. Dendrites: highly branched processes which carry nervous impulses toward the soma c. Axon: long cytoplasmic process which carries nervous impulses away from the soma i. Synaptic terminal (aka, synaptic knob, axon terminal): end of an axon which interacts with another cell at the synapse d. Synapse: junction between a neuron and another cell 2. Neuronal classification a. Structural classification i. Bipolar: has one long axon and only one dendrite, positioned at opposite ends of the soma; occurs in special sense organs ii. Unipolar (aka, pseudounipolar): appears to have one process
