BioEE1780 Fall 2011 Evolution and Biodiversity Today’s lecturer: Irby Lovette Lectures 1 & 2: August 24 & 26, 2011 1. Introductory slideshow: biodiversity and evolutionary biology as far-reaching and very exciting disciplines. 2. Reminders about some course logistics: • Read through the syllabus in the next few days — we will talk about course logistics in lecture on Friday • No discussion sections this week – work with us to get settled in a section (see syllabus) • iClickers will be used in lecture starting Monday (August 29)—so don’t forget it! • Track 2 “Writing in the Majors. ..” applications are due on Sunday Aug 28th! Applications can be found on Blackboard. • See Blackboard for info on student-led study groups (available to everyone; highly recommended to all new Cornell students!). • Encountering enrollment or section change problems? Be patient, persevere, and help us work the system on your behalf. Try to add or change via CourseEnroll, but meanwhile also talk to Findley to be put on the waitlist if you have not yet been able to add the course at all, or email us (see syllabus) if you are having trouble changing sections. 3. Introductory Lecture 1. The purpose of this lecture is to give you an overview of some of the most important themes we will cover this term. Our first lecture covers “selection thinking,” which provides a framework for interpreting how natural selection drives biological patterns. The second lecture (Friday) addresses “tree thinking,” which is how we use history—often in the form of evolutionary trees, or phylogenies—to understand biological diversity and to make biological inferences. These lectures parallel textbook chapter 1. We will return to these topics throughout the semester. Study suggestion: read chapter 1, review the lecture
