Monday's lecture: x-ray diffraction basics and results for Mb 6 categories of molecular interactions constraints around the peptide bond Today’s lecture: We can see at once the entire range of "not allowed angles" by using a Ramachandran Map. This “map” shows φ , ψ values that would cause steric hindrance. The map on the top left of p. 49 is for poly(Gly), the smallest possible AA, which has a side chain of only H. For just one more carbon (the C β of Ala) there are many more regions of unfavorable steric hindrance , as shown in the map on the top right for poly(Ala): the entire upper right quadrant, the lower right quadrant, and the lower half of the lower left quadrant are "not allowed" for poly(Ala). In total, about 85% of all φ and ψ
