Discussion 1. Does anyone know how Stuart Hall describes “culture”? a. Basically he says that culture is not conceived as a separate “way of life” but as “ways of struggle.” 2. SO how does this relate to Rai music? a. Rai artists adapt old lyrics with a new musical context… with a message that reflects the social and political conflicts of the Algerians living both in Algeria and France 3. There are a lot of issues about authenticity. . can anyone talk about that? a. Ok basically, a lot of younger artists are embracing the Western culture, using new instruments, vulgar lyrics and this raises a controversy because the older generations think the new generations lack identity and cultural specificity. b. The older generations believe that the return to turath, which is heritage and nostalgia, is the basis for PRESERVING their Arab culture…while others want to use a more western model. c.
