A Revolution in Four-Part Harmony Focus Questions (Shelemay): 1. What are the different layers of meaning in “Nkosi Sikelel iAfrica” and how does this relate to Shelemay’s concept of “hidden” and “public” transcripts in music? Use the performance of “Nkosi Sikelel iAfrica” in the film Amandla! to make your points. This song, first a Christian hymn was transformed into a musical song for political resistance and ended up being the national anthem. It inspired the resistance against apartheid and became and international symbol of victory in the fight for racial equality. 2. Do you agree with Shelemay’s assertion that hip hop “has remained an important medium of political expression?” Explain your answer by using examples of current hip hop artists.
