Unformatted text preview: Introduction to Gear Design: Spur & Rack Gears Engineering Overview Course Evaluation Project Update Introduce Ideal Spur Gear Design Design Equations Inventor Design Accelerator Project Update Part two has been updated: All designs must retro-ft the existing Foppy using spur, worm, and rack gears. No modifcations to Foppy chassis. Alternate designs will be handled as bonus. Maplesot will be giving instruction in tutorial next week on usage o MapleSim Gearing components. Project Specifcation Updated The project spec has been updated to include clarifcations and assigned team design parameters. IF you are unclear on the objectives, please seek help early Instructional Assistant Interns have oFfce hours every day Dr. Doyle has oFfce hours on Mondays From 2-5pm. Simplifed Ideal Gear Design As suggested in your project part-1, your simplifed ideal gear design can be composed oF primitive shapes (e.g. cylinders, disks, etc.) Recall the lecture discussion example regarding two cylinders in contact... Simplifed Ideal Gear Design 2 Consider the ideal case of two parallel cylinders that are in contact through a point of tangency One cylinder ` s radius is twice that of the other (R2 is twice R1). In the ideal case where the system is lossless and friction between the cylinders is such that no slippage occurs, what would you expect the rotation speed of the small cylinder to be of the large cylinder is rotating at 1 revolution per minute?
