Construct the Brouwer diagram for a pure binary oxide MO of the rocksalt structure for which, at the temperature of interest, the predominant defects are electron-hole pairs and Frenkel defects are negligible. Show Brouwer approximation and derive how each species changes in each region. 2. It is observed that the compound MX, where M is a 1 + cation and X is a 1 - anion, exists over a measurable composition range: MX 1+ ; and that the band gap is quite small. Assuming that Frenkel cation defects are the predominant ionic defect, plot schematically, as a function of from -0.1 to 0.1, (1) the density, (2) the concentration of “free” or mobile electrons; and (3) the concentration of holes. 3. Zirconia, ZrO 2 , is doped with 1.5 mole % yttria, Y 2 O 3 (or 3 mole % Y). The predominant defects in undoped ZrO 2 are Frenkel anion defects. The equilibrium constant for the formation of these defects is given by:
