Instructor Name: Capt Jared Grady, Assistant Professor of Aerospace Studies Office: Student Activities Center (SAC) 222 Office Hours: By appointment Office phone: (310) 825-9758 E-Mail: jaredgrady@ucla.edu 2. Class Time, Location, and Credit a. Friday 1300-1550 Haines A78 3.0 hour/4 units b. Official university enrollment is required to attend class. Those not enrolled by week three will not be allowed to attend class without an official memorandum providing a valid explanation for lack of enrollment. 3. Course Description AS130 is a study of leadership, management fundamentals, professional knowledge, Air Force personnel and evaluation systems, leadership ethics, and the communication skills required of an Air Force junior officer. Case studies are used to examine Air Force leadership and management situations as a means of demonstrating and exercising practical application of the concepts being studied. A mandatory Leadership Laboratory complements this course by providing advanced leadership experiences in officer-type activities, giving students the opportunity to apply the leadership and management principles of this course. 4. Course Goals a. Understand leadership, followership, and management in the context of being an Air Force Officer b. Learn your own leadership and followership tendencies, strengths, and weakness, and practice new leadership techniques c. Continue to improve your communications skills 5. Course Text Books a. Leadership Studies (T-309) b. Principles of Leadership and Management (T-307) c. Concepts for Air Force Leadership (AU-24) d. Tongue and Quill (AFH 33-337) e. The Armed Forces Officer f. Letter Grades : Your grade in this class is based on your performance. You must achieve a grade of “C-“ or better in your Aerospace Studies courses to maintain academic retention standards and remain in AFROTC. Your grade in this course is based on the following scale: 93 - 100 % A 90 – 92.9 % A- 87 - 89.9 % B+ 83 – 86.9 % B 80 – 82.9 % B- 77 – 79.9 % C+ 73 – 76.9 % C 70 – 72.9 % C- 67 – 69.9 % D+ 63 – 66.9 % D 60 – 62.9 % D- 59.9% - below F b. Assignment weighting : Student assignments and exams will be individually graded and combined using the following weights to determine the final course grade: Activity (% of overall grade) Class Attendance 5% Class Participation 15% Quizzes (2) 10% each Written Assignment 20% Final 35% Total 100% c. Missed/Late assignments
