Ch 7: Climates Communication climate the emotional tone of a relationship between people. Ex: goofy, formal, tense, supportive, warm We construct climate through interaction. Based on communication patterns. CONFIRMATION conveys a person is valued 3 levels: Recognition- acknowledge existance Acknowledgement- actively listen Endorsement- involve feelings DISCONFIRMATION conveys a person is not valued or doesn’t exist 3 levels: Indifference- ignore Imperviousness- lack of awareness of his/her thoughts Disqualification- discredit his/her thoughts Confirming responses value more -direct acknowledgement: respond to what someone says -agreement about judgements: agree on other person’s opinion -supportive response: express reassurance -clarifying response: ask questions to get more information -expression of positive feeling: share excitement -compliment: good job, I like your shoes disconfirming responses value less -impervious response: don’t acknowledge or respond to person
