10/2/2011 2 REFLECTION ON LAST WEEK Spreadsheet Modeling and Analysis Spreadsheet Modeling and Analysis Spreadsheets are widely used • to perform calculations • to record and organize data • to present data in easy-to- understand forms • to build models • to perform simulations (e.g. what-if analyses) c c Analysis Tools in Excel s What-If? Change input(s); determine effect on output(s) s Data Tables Change input(s) over a range; tabulate output(s) s Goal Seek Specify output; determine input to achieve it s Scenario Manager Set up combination of inputs (scenario) Determine effect on outputs

10/2/2011 3 Spreadsheet Model Verification • Explain the spreadsheet model to colleagues to identify errors or improvements Walk-Through • Run the model with the known input/output data to determine if it produces correct results Known Condition Tests • Run the model with very large, zero, or very small input values to determine if the outputs are appropriate Extreme Condition Tests • Examine the model with knowledgeable stakeholders to see if it’s behavior seems reasonable Stakeholder Review • Run the model on the historical input data and compare the model results with historical actuals. • Time permitting, use the model to predict results, then compare the predictions with actual outcomes .
