11/18/2011 3 Queries, Reports, and Forms Query A question asked about the data in a database Report A formatted printout (or screen display) of information Form Used to enter, edit, or view records in a table Output Output Input Structured Query Language (SQL) When you want to retrieve data from a relational database, you ask for it using SQL Even when you create a query with Query by Example of using a Query Wizard, they create SQL statements, which are used behind the scenes Example select price from stock where price > 80 Access Differences “Save As” does not work in the usual way Queries, reports, and forms provide different “views” of the data Access saves their design Their content is re-created each time they are run Calculated field values are not stored And should not be, because they could become out-of- date The expression for calculation is saved Value is recalculated each time field is used
