Psych Lecture Notes 09/30/10 Consciousness Part Two Notes on Movie: Parasomnia – Ken fell asleep watching a movie, then drove to his in-laws' house and killed them. He remembered driving home, then saw an image of his mother-in-law dying and his hands were badly cut up and he didn't remember doing it himself, and he drove to the police court. It's believed that his strong sense of stress from gambling and failing business that triggered it. Parasomnia is a halfway between being awake and asleep. Parasomnia occurs when stage 4 sleep is disturbed. Altered Levels of Consciousness -Hypnosis: systematic procedure that typically produces a heightened sense of susceptibility -Various factors involved in hypnosis -Anesthesia -Sensory Distortions -Disinhibition -Post-hypnotic amnesia -Hilgard -Altered level of consciousness; dissociation -Spanos -Subjects interpret their behavior as caused by something other than self -Rituals surrounding hypnosis increase suggestibility and create expectations -Hypnotic subjects are those more likely to be absorbed in fantasy -Summation of Spano's beliefs: -Hypnosis represents a voluntary action, brought about by expectations -Hypnotic behaviors are highly motivated, goal-directed social behaviors -Hypnosis is not truly an altered state of consciousness -Good hypnotic subjects are most suggestible -Psychoactive Drugs: a substance that affects perception, mood, thinking, memory, or behavior
