November 10, 2009 Lecture -Guest speaker today. Joe Discher. Wtf is this shit -He is not an actor. Primarily director. In charge of casting and other administrative responsibilities. o Casting is part of the “artistic” side Artistic side means anything that is shown on the stage, lighting, costume designer, assignments, casting, etc. Artistic decisions. o Other side is “financial” side Handles budget. -Usually directs Shakespeare for his professional stage. -Why did he start with that speech? o It is from Henry V. o It is used to capture audience attention and set the background information (in the play). o It is about two monarchies. -Theater encourages us to use our imagination. This differs from other media mediums that do not engage our creativity in any way. TV, games, etc gratifies you instantly. Plays give you all the tools to envision a production with some imagination.
