Nonverbal Communication and Teacher-Student Interaction Nonverbal behavior plays a pertinent role in interacting with other people. It is responsible for 93% of a message being sent (“Secrets of Body Language”). Whether consciously or unconsciously, we are always sending nonverbal messages to those around us. Communicating with others would not be possible without these behaviors. In classroom settings, nonverbal cues are given by students and teachers, as well as surrounding features. The classroom is an important area of research since education is a valuable intangible in our lives. The key to being a successful teacher is maintaining control and dominance as the instructor, but simultaneously developing relationships with the students in an approachable and warm environment. The atmosphere of the classroom is controlled by the teacher, and students should behave appropriately in response to the teacher’s demeanor. “Initial encounters make a major difference to the success or failure of classroom relationships. Dominance makes clear to pupils exactly what they should do, as well as what they should not do.” (Neill, pg. 29) Teacher expectations and attitudes largely influence the way in which students respond in the learning environment. A student can become more engaged and enthusiastic about the class if the teacher is motivating and accessible. A student can also become bored and distracted by a boring lecture or dull, distant teacher. The most common form of teacher expectations come from the theory of self- fulfilling prophecy. This means that if a teacher expects a particular student may excel in his class, he will be more likely to act in ways that, in turn, lets this initial expectation to come true. A teacher may judge a student by his/her appearance, attitude, voice, etc. If a
