Psychotherapy – the use of psychological techniques and the therapist-client relationship to produce emotional, cognitive, and behavior change Different treatments work better for different disorders Adherents to different paradigms offer very different treatments Most mental health professionals describe themselves as eclectic Evidence-based treatments – the practical and scientific approach to therapy 87% of people with a diagnosable mental disorder have not received treatment in the past year Biological Treatments Focus on alleviating symptoms without necessarily elminating the cause of the symptoms Look for genetic, chemical causes Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) – involves causing seizures by passing electricity through the brain Can be bilateral – pass through both brain hemispheres or unilateral – pass through one hemisphere Can cause memory impairment (esp at high doeses, bilateral) and even death Typically used when other treatments are not effective, esp for severe depression Psychosurgery – surgical destruction of specific regions of brain Frontal lobotomy – severing the frontal lobes of the brain Eventually discredited due to limited benefits and severe side effects (emotional unresponsiveness, excessive tranquility, death) Today, cinguloomy (lesioning pinpointed regions of the cingulate cortex) can be used to treat very severe cases of OCD when other treatment methods have failed Psychopharmacology – use of medications to treat psychological disturbances Antidepressants, modd stabilizers, anxiolytics, antiobessionals, antipsychotics Don’t cure underlying cause, but alleviate symptoms
