PSY 231 Assignment 3 Due 10/25/11 Childhood obesity is one of largest issues facing our world today. This can occur from poor nutrition, lack of physical activity, stress, psychological beliefs, or genetics. Based on three articles, I believe there are many different ways to encourage children to engage in a healthier lifestyle. The first article I read by Cecil-Karb and Grogan-Kaylor studied the association between neighborhood environments and health in children. “When parents perceive their neighborhood to be unsafe, they will restrict their children’s outdoor activities and increase the likelihood of sedentary indoor activity” (Cecil-Karb & Grogan-Kaylor, 2009, p. 169). This causes children to engage in less physical activity, in which they turn to poor habits such as increased television watching. Children then gain more weight and fat because they are most likely consuming more calories without burning it off. Results from this study showed that black and Latino children were more likely than white children to be overweight or at risk of being overweight (Cecil-Karb & Grogan-Kaylor, 2009). This is supported by the fact that black and Latino families are more likely to have less education and income than whites. In turn, this causes them to live in unsafe
